Nyon, Vaud, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - The town of Nyon is offering Uefa, the European football federation, its sports centre for the symbolic price of CHF1. Nyon will save CHF850,000 a year in maintenance and upkeep and Uefa will receive a 49-year lease on the Colovray centre that will allow it to build additional football fields near its head office, to be used for training referees and team trainers.
The agreement must still be approved by the town’s communal council and the board of Uefa.
The money saved by Nyon will be used for sports, the town says, to create an overall programme designed to match its rapidly growing population. The centre will remain multi-sport: it currently hosts football but also rugby and athletics meets.
For UEFA, managing the centre will allow it to take a more active role in the sports life of the region where it is based: local sports groups currently using the centre will be assured the right to remain and Uefa will build a synthetic field and upgrade the stadium to match Challenge League norms.
