London, England (GenevaLunch) – Wimbledon Champion Rafa Nadal announced that he will not be defending his title because of tendinitis in both knees. The decision was made after he lost two warm-up matches against Leyton Hewitt and Stanislav Wawrinka, and was clearly suffering against both players.
Pundits have been speculating on the underlying causes of the injuries: has Nadal been playing too much, is his style too punishing on his body, or is the problem with the developments in tennis rackets and stringing?
Roger Federer will now become top seed and favourite to win a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title. He will also regain the world number one ranking if he makes it to the semi-finals.
Andy Murray will be second seed and British fans will be hoping for the first British win since Fred Perry in the 1930s.
