Durban, South Africa (GenevaLunch) - South Africa dominated the first half of an intense physical encounter with the British and Irish Lions and then held on to win 26-21 despite a spirited comeback by the Lions.
The Lions’ scrum was decimated as Tendai Mtawarira crushed Phil Vickery in the front row and won a series of penalties. After an hour the Lions were down 26-7 and the South Africans started to bring on substitutes. From this point the Lions started to fight back, reducing the deficit to 26-21 and looking like they might take the match in the last few minutes.
The next of the three tests will be in Pretoria, South Africa.
