Washington, DC (GenevaLunch) - The US Justice Department has e-mailed major US media to deny a story that appeared 23 June in the New York Times, calling the report that the government plans to drop a lawsuit again Swiss bank UBS “simply untrue.”
The newspaper had quoted a US official who, the reporter says, has been briefed on the case, without naming him or her. The Justice Department notes that it plans to make its next filing in the federal case against UBS 30 June and a judge will hold a hearing 13 July.
The Swiss government and UBS have made no comment on the newspaper article. Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz has been in Berlin for meetings of 20 finance ministers from OECD and European Union counries. He addressed the group Tuesday 23 June, emphasizing Switzerland’s determination to sign 12 revised tax treaties by the end of 2009. He also called for a level playing field for monitoring tax agreements and for a firm stance against protectionist measures where cross-border flows of money are concerned.
