Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) -  Residence permits issued by the Swiss authorities will need to have biometric information embedded on them, in order to comply with Schengen rules. The government decided 24 June to open the issue to the consultation process, in order to give concerned offices time to adapt the applicable laws.

The new permits would have a chip containing a photo and two fingerprints of the holder. The government has till May 2011 to issue them.
