Wimbledon, England (GenevaLunch) - Andy Murray fought his way past Swiss number two Stanislav Wawrinski in a five-set thriller that lasted more than four hours, taking advantage of the new retractable roof that allowed play to continue until the finish at 22:39.
Wawrinski dominated the first set to win 2-6 but Murray took the next two and looked on a roll. The Swiss player came back to win the fourth 5-7 but missed a few key points and lost the final set. The final score was 2-6 6-3 6-3 5-7 6-3.
Roger Federer repeated his French Open win over Robin Soderling 6-4 7-6 7-6 in a battle of big serves. Leyton Hewitt came back from two sets down to beat R Stepanek 4-6 2-6 6-1 6-2 6-2. Novak Djokovic beat Israeli Dudi Sela 6-2 6-4 6-1. Andy Roddick, Ivo Karlovic, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Haas also came through.
In the womens’ matches Dinara Safina beat Amelie Mauresmo 4-6 6-3 6-4 in a game that was interupted to cover the Centre Court for the first time in an official match. Ana Ivanovic retired, hurt, against Venus Williams, while Serena Williams cruised past Daniela Hantuchova. Elena Dementieva, Victoria Azarenka, Sabine Lisicki, Agnnieska Radwanska and Francesca Schiavone also won.
