Update 2, 21:10  Saas-Fee and Bourg-St-Pierre, Valais, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Four people have died in Valais in climbing accidents over the weekend of 11-12 July. A 47-year-old Italian climber fell more than 300 metres to his death from a cliff at about 3,300 metres altitude shortly after leaving the Mischabels hut near Saas-Fee early Sunday afternoon 12 July. He was part of a group of four Italian climbers.

They had gone about 150 metres when he fell, for reasons that are not clear. The group had been heading back to Saas-Fee. An rescue helicopter found the man’s body.

Earlier in the day, around 08:30, two climbers fell 100 metres to their deaths in circumstances that are not clear, at Grand Combin, above Bourg-St-Pierre in Valais, at an altitude of 3,800 metres. The two have not been formally identified. The alert was raised by a third climber who witnessed the accident.

A fourth person, a 47-year-old Czech man, died Saturday as he was descending the south face of the Dent-Blanche, at 3,700 metres.
