A poll of 24,000 people in 26 countries shows that the view of the United States by people in other countries has improved under US President Barack Obama and is now on a par with attitudes shortly before George W Bush took office. He scored higher in Germany than Chancellor Angela Merkel and in France than President Nicolas Sarkozy in the survey undertaken by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, which notes that “signs of improvement in views of America are seen even in some predominantly Muslim countries that held overwhelmingly negative views of the United States in the Bush years.” The only country where approval has fallen is Israel. The Pew Project is based in Washington, DC. New York Times
