Gland, Vaud, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Seven-times world champion racing driver Michael Schumacher announced he would stand in for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in the upcoming race in Valencia, Spain 23 August. Schumacher, 40, who lives on the shores of Lake Geneva, retired from Formula 1 racing in 2006 but continued as a team advisor for the Ferrari team where he won five of his seven championships.
Ferrari said: “Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa’s car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race.” Brazilian Massa crashed his car 25 July in Budapest, Hungary on qualifying trials and was hospitalized for a fractured skull and concussion.
The news comes on the heels of BMW’s announcement that it will be leaving Formula 1 racing, the latest in a string of news shocks for Grand Prix racing.
