Montreal, Canada (GenevaLunch) – Swiss and world number 1 Roger Federer made a successful return to tennis after taking off a month to be with his wife and twin baby girls. He won 7-6, 6-4 against Quebec player Frédéric Niemeyer without dropping a serve. Andy Murray, the third seed, looked impressive as he beat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-2.
Novak Djokovic also won against a Canadian, Peter Polansky, 6-4, 7-6. Leyton Hewitt was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by another former number 1, Juan Carlos Ferrero. Rafael Nadal, number 2, has not yet played his singles match and is up against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in his first serious game since the French Open.
Swiss number 2 Stanislav Wawrinka beat Nicolas Keefer 6-4, 6-1.
