The only man convicted and jailed for the bombing in 1988 of PanAm flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie may be released from jail on compassionate grounds. He is suffering from terminal prostrate cancer. Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrah, a Libyan intelligence agent, was the only person convicted of the bombing, 12 years after it happened. Scottish ministers deny these rumours, but Scottish Justice secretary Kenny MacAskill recently visited al-Megrah in prison. The UK ratified an agreement in May whereby prisoners in one country can serve out their sentence in the other. Release on compassionate grounds is usually granted only when the prisoner has less than three months to live. BBC, Reuters
