Newfoundland towns evacuated nursing homes and prepared for the worst as Hurricane Bill promised to land in Canada with a punch, but early morning Monday 24 August a weakened hurricane blew across the area at 56 kph with gusts up to 100 kph and heavy rains. Canada is less well known for hurricanes than areas to the south, but it has a long history of being brushed by storms, including the first recorded hurricane, in 1775, which killed 4,000 people.
