Conference is 31 August – 4 September 2009
Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The third World Climate Conference (WCC-3) promises “better climate information for a better future” but in the immediate short term it is expected to cause a severe strain on Geneva’s traffic and accommodations this week.
The conference opens today 31 August at the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG) near the Place des Nations and runs through Friday 4 September. Over 1,500 participants are in town, including 20 heads of state and 6o ministers.
Geneva hotels are filled to bursting, but can be had at a price. Geneva boasts 13 five-star hotels. Traffic around the Nations area is likely to be dense at rush hour in the morning and evening, although the cantonal police have not drawn particular attention to the traffic [Ed. note: reporting from the conference centre, the traffic has in fact been smooth Monday morning, but with the UN secretary general and ministers in town Wednesday and Thursday tightened security could lead to traffic problems.]
The weather will be fine for the the opening of the weather conference, at least. Thunderstorms are expected Wednesday 2 September, and rain on 3 and 4 September.
