Fribourg, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Max, the white stork who has been tracked for longer than any other bird of her kind, 11 years, may have completed her winter migratory trip, and she is now 110 km south of Madrid.
The Natural History Museum in Fribourg, which tracks the bird, says she arrived Tuesday evening 8 September in Alcazar de San Juan, where she slept for the night, so she apparently won’t be spending the winter near Madrid, as she did last year. It is not yet clear if she will continue on to Sevilla where she spent the winter of 2007/08 or cross over to Morocco.
Max, who was born near Avenches in Switzerland, returns to the area, nesting in southern Germany, every summer. This year she gave birth to three young white storks.
