Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Some 30,000 people marched in Bern Saturday 19 September to protest against as the economic crisis and what the organizers describe as misguided government rescue measures. It was the capital’s biggest demonstration since 2003.
Marchers protested against layoffs and reductions in social security payments, said Paul Rechsteiner, the president of the Swiss Federation of trade unions (SFTU), noting that the Swiss government in Bern has, at the same time, paid out CHF68 billion to rescue bank UBS. Protesters arrived from all over Switzerland in special trains, and 10,000 more participated than were expected by the organizers.
