Zurich, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - An advance team of seven earthquake experts was scheduled to leave Zurich for Sumatra at noon today Thursday 1 October, to be followed Friday by 120 members of Swiss Rescue, who will provide search and rescue operation aid. The team will also undertake emergency relief work and help assess the needs of the population

A member of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is flying out from Switzerland with the first group today.

Swiss Rescue is part of the federal Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, a group of specialist who can be ready to leave for any part of the world in 8-12 hours following a catastrophe. It works closely with eight Swiss partner groups, including the Swiss Army’s rescue services, Rega helicopter resuce services and the airline Swiss.
