A photo of  a wolf leaping over a fence, poised to strike, has won first prize at the 2009 Veolia International Wildlife Photographer of the Year award 21 October. Jose Luis Rodriguez spent years preparing for a photo in which “you would see a wolf in an act of hunting – or predation – but without blood”, he said. “I didn’t want a cruel image.” The Iberian wolf is a a rare sub-species of the greywolf.

Other winners include a photo of male yellowhammer birds fighting over oats and a cat defending its territory against a fox in Siberia. The competition is in its 45th year. BBC
