Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Betty E King of New York has been nominated by US President Barack Obama to be the new US ambassador in Geneva, to  the United Nations and Other International Organizations, the US Mission in Geneva has announced. Her nomination will need the approval of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee (background story on the process, GenevaLunch). The process can take two to three months.

Betty King has a wealth of experience in government and working with or for non-profit organizations, most recently as a board member of the United Nations Association of the United States. She has previously been a US ambassador, serving as the representative to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush. The UN Dispatch notes that “in that capacity, Ms King worked on human rights, children, development, aging and population issues. She was the principal US negotiator on the Millennium Development Goals.” It also points to her experience with philanthropic organizations, including California’s largest, the California Endowment in Los Angeles.

She has been a senior fellow at UCLA’s School of Public Policy, which notes that she has “represented US interests in a wide range of issues including development, population, refugees, HIV/AIDS, the environment, women, children and the aged, and in the participation of non-governmental organizations in that inter-governmental body.” She was born in the West Indies, took degrees in Canada and Stony Brook, New York and was a National Humanities Fellow at Harvard University.
