Bern and Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Geneva’s Graduate Institute has been officially recognized as an institution of higher learning at the university level, according to the federal state secretariat for education and research (SER). The recognition means that the institute can receive federal subsidies for higher education, and the diplomas granted are officially recognized.
The Graduate Institute, a union of the former IHEI, the graduate institute for international studies, founded in 1927, and the IUED, the university institute of development studies, founded in 1962, was officially born 1 January 2008. As its name implies, it offers degree programmes in both French and English in development and international studies, and is renowned for its strong expertise in international law, politics, and economics, and in history and political science.
Isabella Brunelli, a spokeswoman for SER, told GenevaLunch that the recognition was purely a formality, since both the original institutes were federally recognized.
