Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (GenevaLunch) - Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber grabbed the top two places in the final Grand Prix of the 2009 season in Abu Dhabi. It was the first race to take place on the track, and the first day-night Grand Prix race. Jenson Button, who had captured the championship in the previous Grand Prix, took third place after an unsuccessful fight to pass Webber in the final laps.
His Brawn GP teammate Rubens Barrichello was fourth. The drivers and team owners were lavish with their praise for the venue but it still has not solved the real problem of Grand Prix racing: the difficulty of overtaking, which reduces so many races to a procession interrupted by pit stops and the occasional breakdown. Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 champion, started in pole position but had problems with his brakes and stopped on the 20th lap.
Overall the 2009 season was made up of two distinct parts: in the first half ,GP Brawn had the best cars and Jenson Button took full advantage to dominate. Red Bull fought back in the second half, with Vettel and Webber doing well, while MacLaren also recovered from their miserable start.
The sixth place for Kobayashi in his Toyota might help maintain the interest of the Japanese car makers. The Swiss can feel content with the eighth place of Sebastian Buemi while Ferrari will be hoping that next season is better.
