FIFA and communications director part company over strategy
Zurich, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - The Zurich-based world body governing football, FIFA, announced 7 December the names of five male and five female football players who are candidates for the prestigious Footballer of the year 2009 award.
The five women are Cristiane (Brazil), Inka Grings (Germany), Marta (Brazil), Birgit Prinz (Germany) and Kelly Smith (England). The men are Andres Iniesta (Spain), Kaka (Brazil), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and Xavi (Spain). The names are chosen by a poll sent to coaches and captains of national teams around the world. The award will be presented 21 December at Zurich’s Kongresshaus.
Hans Klaus, FIFA director of communications and public affairs, has left, the organization announced Tuesday. He has been on the job less than two years, and USA Today attributes his departure to divergent views on the communications strategy. Klaus is Swiss and formerly worked for Swissair.
