Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - The International Standardization Organization (ISO), based in Geneva, says that certification by companies around the world to its standards is up in spite of the recession. The 2008 annual survey of companies certified to conformity , published 7 December, notes that certification of companies’ management systems for quality control, food safety, and information security were up sharply in 2008, despite the recession.
ISO speculates that companies may judge that certification of quality standards by an internationally recognized authority confers an advantage in gaining or maintaining customers. It is “a clear demonstration that [standards] have become essential tools of the world economy and retain their attraction for organizations even in time of crisis. It is also possible that organizations look to management systems for supporting their objectives even more during a crisis”, says ISO.
