Lausanne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Geneva has its famous Escalade run, but Lausanne is quickly catching up with its Midnight Run, now in its fourth year, a popular race through the city centre the week before Christmas. Santas galore, 400 of them, raced in Lausanne Saturday night 19 December, part of the crowd of 1,987 runners who braved the falling snow and hilly city streets. They could opt to race 2.5, 5 or 7.5km.
The fastest runner was Ethiopian Chengere Tolossa, but most runners were more concerned about staying warm or winning prizes for their imaginative costumes than their speed, the organizers report. Two of the winning costumes were for a sleigh pulled by reindeer and for a forest of candles.
