Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The World Health Organization (WHO) publishged a report Friday 8 January that the number of deaths from the H1N1 flu have risen to 12,799 worldwide, but it also pinpointed areas where the virus remains strong. Switzerland was one of Europe’s top three countries for specimens testing positive:
“Among countries testing more than 20 clinical specimens from sentinel sites in the past week, the greatest proportions of samples testing positive for influenza were observed in Greece (72%), Georgia (54%), Switzerland (49%), Portugal (48%), Germany (48%), Luxembourg (40%), Romania (30%), Poland (25%), and Albania (23%.”
The report notes a high level of respiratory infections in Poland, Serbia, Ukraine and Georgia, a concern given that the H1N1 virus remains strongly in circulation.
