Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Swiss police have arrested two people and seized 5.5 litres of the chemical GBL and small quantities of several drugs as part of an international drug ring bust. The operation  has been centred around a 31-year-old German chemicals wholesaler who was selling massive quantities of the substance gammabutyrolactone (GBL), sometimes used as a date rape drug because it is odourless and colourless. Mixed with alcohol or in more than small quantities it can be lethal.

The coordinated police operation was carried out by police in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. Swiss police have been tracking synthetic substances since at least the summer of 2008 when they made a number of arrests and shut down two laboratories that were manufacturing illegal substances.

  1. John R Blundell Says:

This type of business does not surprise me here in the UK we estimate that there are 100,000 cases of drink spiking per year. the drinks consumption across Europe is circa 10 times the UK it is not outsides the comprehension to assume the number of drink spikings would be of the same magnitude. last yerar the german police confiscated circs 6 tonnes of GHB in one raid around Munich. GBL is a much used industrial solvent and has recently been clasified in the UK as a classs C drug this will increase the price from its currant £0.20 per 6 ml dose to £0.60 per dose this will not stop the availability or the use of this drug.
The only way is to educate the young drinkers and to putprevetative measure in place such as the ToppStoppa which is a device which fits all crown Cap bottles and gives tamper evidence see http://www.topp-stoppa.com
