Lausanne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - WWF Switzerland has filed a complaint with the European Union over the continuing support by some Swiss electricity companies of coal-based electricity production in northern Germany. Romande Energie is among several Swiss electricity suppliers who participate in the coal-based activities at Brunsbuettel in northern Germany.
The company announced in August 2008 it would invest CHF36 million in the plant, which would provide it with enough energy for 85,000 households.
The plant has been the target recently of protests and complaints from the local population: according to WWW Switzerland, which calls refers to the “prehistoric technology” used to produce energy from coal, the CO2 emissions from the plant are equal to the amount of CO2 produced by all cars in Switzerland.
