The North Memorial Medical Centre in Minnesota, USA has agreed to pay $105,000 to David Nelson, whose wife, Mary Ann, died of  cancer after months of treatment during which the couple say they never understood the importance of her condition, reports the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Mary Ann died in May 2006.

The Minnesota Dept. of Human Rights argues that the hospital was under the obligation to provide the couple with interpreters who could explain Nelson’s condition and her treatment. The couple was limited to reading the lips of the health care staff or writing them notes and reading the educational material handed out by them.
