Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Swiss businessman Max Goeldi, one of two Swiss businessmen detained in Libya, has had his sentence for visa violations reduced on appeal from 16 months to four. His countryman Rachid Hamdani was acquitted of the same charges 7 February. It was not immediately clear whether the two men would now be allowed to leave the country.

Amnesty International says it is disappointed by the verdict, having pressed for an acquittal. Goeldi’s lawyer Salah al-Zahaf says he can appeal the 11 February verdict to the supreme court.

Goeldi and Hamdani have been denied permission to leave Libya since July 2008, when the son of Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi was arrested in Geneva with his pregnant wife.
