Prepare for a new world record in text messaging, with Chinese New Year kicking off 13 February: last year the Chinese send 18 billion SMS, or 18 SMS per subscriber. This year the number is expected to rise to 19b. The current IT stimulus programme of the Chinese government is helping increase use of mobile phones. Information technology research and advisory company Gartner says that it “expects stimulus policies will drive IT spending in telecom to reach $4.5 billion in 2010, and for the period from 2009 through 2013 IT spending in this segment will surpass $14.2 billion.”
SMS volume worldwide is expected to reach 2.3 trillion in 2010, according to Gartner.
