Vancouver, Canada (GenevaLunch) - Canada celebrated a famous victory as they beat the USA 3-2 in the final to take gold. Canada scored once in the first period. In the second period the Americans could not take advantage of their first powerplay advantage and conceded a second goal shortly afterwards. Ryan Kesler scored for the USA with seven minutes left of the second period. Canada twice hit the frame early in the third period and dominated most of the play but were kept out by US goalie Ryan Miller.
Miller was taken off as the game entered the final minute of the third period. The USA team struck back with an equaliser with less than 30 seconds left to send the game into a 20 minute sudden death overtime. The gold medal goal was scored by Sidney Crosby.
Canada ended the Winter Olympic Games with a record 14 gold medals. The final one was the most important of all.
Norwegian Peter Northug won a thrilling sprint to take the classic 50km cross country skiing in the penultimate event. Axel Teichmann was second for Germany while Johan Olsson gave Sweden the bronze. Swiss gold medallist in the 15km Dario Cologna fell at the last bend when in third place and ended 10th.
