Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - The rate of theft per inhabitant in Geneva jumped 7 percent in 2009 and is now the highest in Switzerland, police figures released Tuesday 23 March show.
Car thefts, of which there were 470, rose by 8.9 percent but bicycle thefts, of which there were 3,300, rose by a startling 62.8 percent.
Purse snatchings and pickpocketing were up 15 percent: 4,484 cases.
And the culprit is found in only 12 percent of cases for theft as a whole.
Arrests for drugs went up 77 percent in one year, from 6,329 to 11,179 and the number of arrests for visa violations rose 32 percent, to 4,280. But the bulk of crimes, 80 percent, were against property and included theft and vandalism.
Homicides were down from 10 to 8 but the number of attempted murders rose from 20 to 43.
Domestic violence was down by 3 percent, but the police category for this covers several crimes and the number of attempted murders, for example, rose from two in 2008 to nine in 2009.
Crimes against “honour” or privacy as well as protection of professional secrets rose 12 percent, to 1,445.
Geneva’s new councilor for police, security and the environment, Isabel Rochat, Tuesday called the situation “clearly preoccupying” and the canton announced that it will be increasing the police presence in several areas, notably Paquis, around the train station, Eaux-Vives and Rives, from April to December.

It is really shameful. It shows that the Swiss Police are inefficient.
Instead of maintaining pet dogs, they should maintain sniffer dogs to enable the Police to solve the theft/crime/burglary cases. I am also one of the victims.
Security cameras and alarm systems connected to the nearby police stations should be provided at the entrance of each and every building.
The above are my suggestions to take preventive measures to bring the theft/crime/burglary rate down.
