Unemployment in the UK reached 2.5 million, eight percent of the workforce, in the three months that ended 28 February, the highest figure since 1996, statistics released Wednesday 21 April by Britain’s Office for National Statistics show. The greatest increase was in the East Midlands. The new figures are being seen as a blow to Labour as the country prepares for a general election 6 May and the possibility of a hung parliament.
