Craven Cottage, London, UK (GenevaLunch) - Fulham pulled off a famous victory over Hamburg to reach the finals of the Europa Cup, 29 April. They owed it to a wonder goal scored by Simon Davies and to the ability of coach Roy Hodgson, who once lead Switzerland, to get the maximum from limited resources. His men beat Juventus in the previous round.
Hamburg took the lead in the 22nd minute with a free kick by Mladen Petric but the Cottagers hit back with the Davies strike and a follow-up goal by Zoltan Gera. They will meet Atletico Madrid in the final, which will mean a return to Hamburg.
Liverpool’s last chance to win something this season, and possibly to save the job of coach Rafa Benitez, was spoiled by an extra time goal by Diego Forlan. Liverpool won the match 2-1 for a 2-2 aggregate but went out on the away goals rule.
