Mishaps are reportedly to blame for most of the deaths, but Italy is having an unusually large number of deaths among mushroom pickers tempted into forests and wooded mountain slopes by earlier than usual autumn weather, reports Milan newspaper Corriere della Sera.

One of them was a 65-year-old woman near Sondrio, south of St Moritz, not far from the Swiss border.
