Greece, where an estimated 40 percent of adults are smokers, has banned smoking starting today, in enclosed public areas, and not everyone is happy. This is the second attempt to ban smoking in less than a year, with many of the previous legal loopholes closing Wednesday 1 September. Cafe and bar owners say it is coming at a bad time, with the economic crisis still putting the nation under strain. Smokers will be fined about euros 500 and cafes, bars or restaurants where they are caught could be charged up to 10,000.
