Australia’s ruling Labour government, led by Julia Gillard, received the votes necessary to hang onto power when two independent members of parliament decided to support her government. Tony Windsor and Robb Oakeshott, two independents from rural areas, announced their decision 7 September, after lengthy negotiations with both Labour and the opposition Coalition. The election two weeks ago resulted in a 150-seat parliament in which neither party won a clear majority. Labour can now count on 76 MPs.
