GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – A couple aged 85 and 87 in Annemasse, France were found dead early Thursday by a member of the family, reports the Tribune de Geneve, apparently from accidents related to the cold. The couple were retired farmers and the wife, 85, may have slipped on the ice when she went out to feed her chickens. Her husband reportedly suffered from heart problems and died in the barn a few hours later, where he may have gone to look for his wife.

Annecy, France (GenevaLunch) - France will try two of its citizens on attempted murder and other charges stemming from an October 2009 fight outside a disco in Martigny, canton Valais in Switzerland. The attorney general in Valais, Patrick Burkhalter, said Tuesday 26 April that close work by French and Swiss authorities led to the arrest of one of the accused in Geneva in May 2010 and the second in Annemasse, France in June 2010.
The two men, aged 21 and 24 at the time, will now face charges in front of the Grand Tribunal d’Instance in Annecy, with the man arrested in Geneva extradited for the case. The two have admitted to the facts, say Valais police, who have now closed their file and turned over their information to French judicial authorities.
The fight broke out at 04:00 outside a disco, where one of the accused knifed a victim while the other intentionally drove a car into a group of six people, injuring them.
Annecy, France (GenevaLunch) - The killer of a young man, Freddy, murdered near Geneva in September 2007 because his murderer suspected Freddy had stolen €450 from him, was sentenced 3 March to 30 years in prison. The crime drew massive regional media coverage at the time partly because of the gruesome business of finding the victim’s body, which had been chopped into pieces and thrown into or near the Arve river. Two fishermen were the first to find part of his body, the trunk.

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Geneva’s tram lines 14 and 16 will go all the way to Meyrin starting 12 December with five new stops in the town of Meyrin itself. The city’s public transport company, TPG, says that its entire route network has been extended and the frequency of bus and tram services increased.
The fare zones have been changed, partly in anticipation of the joint venture with canton Vaud’s Mobilis fare cooperative starting in late 2010, which will allow a person to travel from Annemasse to Lausanne and beyond with a single ticket. TPG also announced that its call up service Taxibus will be cancelled.
Until 1995, the only tram was the 12 from Carouge to Bachet. From 1995, TPG began important extensions to the tram network which now covers 30km of routes.

Background on local and national Swiss votes 29 November, GenevaLunch
Update 16:40 Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Swiss voters turned Sunday voted to ban the construction of new minarets in the country, with 57.5 percent of voters approving the initiative and 42.5 percent opposed to it. The vote went along language lines, with Swiss Germans voting for the ban and French speakers voting against, although cantons with both languages, such as Valais and Bern, voted soundly to support the ban.
The result is widely seen as a slap in the face to the government, which has strongly opposed the initiative. But it will also be read as a vote against the current situation of Muslims in Switzerland, say most Swiss media. On the one hand, approving the ban will send a signal that the Swiss are worried about “creeping Islamization”, a phrase that was used by the UDC (right-wing People’s Party) during the campaign, and on the other hand, a signal that Muslim ghettoes are not acceptable, reports Swissinfo. The Muslim population has increased by about 350,000 and is now around 4.5 percent of the Swiss population, according to Swissinfo.
Switzerland set to continue arms exports
Voters rejected by 68 percent, early results indicate, a popular initiative to stop Swiss arms exports.

Lausanne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Switzerland’s right-wing UDC party is back in the news for its posters: Lausanne 7 October banned the party’s campaign posters that show a Swiss map crowded with minarets and a frowning, heavily veiled woman. The city says the posters are “racist, irrespectful and dangerous.” Basel-City also banned the posters Tuesday and Geneva will decide Wednesday. The Swiss will vote 29 November on a UDC-sponsored popular referendum to ban the construction of new minarets. Two of the six parties are in favour of it and the government is opposed.
The UDC (SVP in German; People’s Party) sparked a heated national debate and gained international attention in 2008 with posters showing several white sheep and a black one for a vote to send foreign criminals back to their home countries. In May 2009 the Swiss high court ruled in the party’s favour over another poster that showed Muslims prostrate in front of the Swiss federal palace in Bern.

Annemasse, France (Tribune de Geneve, Fre) – A 42-year-old man on trial in Annemasse, France, over the border from Geneva, told a court Monday that it took only seconds for a domestic argument to turn to violence in June 2007 when he murdered his wife, then put her body in a sleeping bag and tried to hide it in a swamp.
