GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Heavyweight champion boxer Joe Frazier is dead, age 67, following a one-month battle with liver cancer. He was the only man to defeat Mohammad Ali in 1971 and the three fights the two had, ending with a victory by Ali in 1975, remain among the greatest matches in the sport’s history.
Frazier was the 1964 Olympic boxing heavyweight gold-medallist, former heavyweight boxing champion and an International Boxing Hall of Fame member.

Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Ukrainian heavyweight Vitali Klitschko was the clear winner of the WBC heavyweight title fight on Saturday night 12 December in Bern. The 38-year-old, known as “Doctor Iron Fist” is probably the first boxing champion to hold a PhD. He won comfortably on points against American Kevin Johnson.

Nuremburg, Germany (GenevaLunch) - British boxer David Haye won the WBA world heavyweight match against the Russian giant Nikolay Valuev Saturday 7 November despite conceding more than 40 kilos and 28 centimetres. The Russian is the tallest and heaviest champion in history: 2.18 metres (7 feet) and 143 kg (315 pounds).
Boxer Arturo Gatti, who was found dead in a hotel room in Brazil 11 July, with a bloodied purse strap next to him, committed suicide by hanging himself in a stairwell, Brazilian authorities have ruled. His wife was arrested on suspicion of murder after his death. She was released Thursday 30 July. The couple, who lived in Canada, had gone to Brazil for a holiday. WBC former welterweight champion Vernon Forrest, 39, known for being an articulate and civic-minded citizen in a sport not always known for these, was shot dead at a gas station in Atlanta, Georgia. He had chased thieves who tried to rob him as he filled the tank of his Jaguar. Atlanta AJC
Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (GenevaLunch) – British boxing star Ricky Hatton was knocked down twice in the first round by Philippine boxer Manny Pacquiao. Zurich, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The giant Russian boxer Nikolei Valuev prevented 46-year-old Evander Holyfield from regaining the World Boxing Association title for a record fifth time on Saturday night in Zurich.
