Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) -The latest twist in the increasingly tangled tale of client data stolen from HSBC in Geneva comes from the thief himself, formerly known as Hervé Falciani. The former HSBC computer system employee who now lives under a new identity in the south of France told French journalists from Nice Matin that in August 2008 he was kidnapped by two men in a van in Geneva’s Champel district. The men were of unclear Middle Eastern origin, perhaps Israeli, says Falciani, who accuses his Lebanese girlfriend at the time of being part of a plot to discredit him.

The Lebanese link has surfaced following accusations by Switzerland that Falciani was trying to sell the names and other information about bank clients, which he acknowledges he stole, to several governments, notably Lebanon.

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Two young men died after the car they were driving crashed into a wall in a curve on the Route du Bout du Monde, in the Champel district of Geneva, Friday evening 6 November. The driver, from canton Aargau, and his front seat passenger died immediately. Another passenger, a 17-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. She is in stable condition, according to the police report.

Last weekend three people died in two separate road accidents in Geneva. The latest accident brings to 18 the number of people killed on roads in Geneva in 2009.

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Opponents to the planned light rail extension known as Ceva, which will link Geneva’s Cornavin and Eaux-Vives stations and Annemasse, handed in 12,700 signatures, almost 5,000 more than necessary, to force citizens in the canton to vote on it. Voters will decide on a supplementary credit of CHF 113 million towards the project that Geneva’s parliament voted for in June.

The referendum’s date has not yet been fixed.
