Major Swiss highway programme changes announced

Annual highway tax/sticker to jump from CHF40 to 100 by 2015

GENEVA / LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – The roadworks weren’t welcome at the time, but the switch in Morges from two to three lanes during rush hour, using  emergency lanes, has been such a success at reducing traffic jams that the Federal Highway Office plans to set up the same system in Geneva and Lausanne.

The measure is part of a series of highway improvements announced by Bern Wednesday 18 January, with the focus on shifting 378km of cantonal roads to the national highway system by 2014, to better  needs  today that are the result of a series of urban developments over the past five decades.

Morges again has special treatment, with the office adding a Morges bypass to the list of projects to be developed sooner rather than later, to ease the growing congestion in the Crissier area. The cost: CHF220 million. Details of a likely bypass, published in 2009, call for a larger loop from Morges Ouest (west) to Ecublens.

The A1 around Morges was given three lanes in 2009, for rush hours

The package includes traffic flow improvements for Coppet-Le Vengeron, at a cost of CHF175m.

The number of kilometres driven on Swiss autoroutes has doubled since 1990. Recent studies show a 34 percent increase in 2010 in the number of hours of traffic jams, to 15,910, compared to 2009 In the next 18 years, some 400km of autoroute will regularly suffered congestion.

The Morges area switch to three lanes during rush hours has improved traffic flow, the highway department says, lowered the accident rate by 15 percent in general and 80 percent locally, and it has also brought about a 20 percent reduction in pollution next to roads: CO, CO2 and NOx emissions.

Bern and Winterthur will see their emergency lanes changed in the near future, with Geneva and Lausanne, but also several other areas including stretches along Lake Zurich, scheduled for later.

Automatic signals to reduce speed for better traffic flow to go from 85km to 400km

Swiss soldiers travel on Swiss trains for free when on duty (photo: Morges station, November 2011)

BERN, SWITZERLAND – The 2012 train schedule that goes into effect 11 December will offer travellers better connections for trips abroad. Some parts of the Lake Geneva region will also see improvements. But the best news for many working travellers is that mobile connections are being improved, as is the online sales service.

The CFF rail company presented highlights of the new schedule to the press Thursday 17 November.

You’ll be able to plug in and connect better in 2012

All the new trains will have electric plugs and existing intercity trains will also get them. “All the new Duplex trains on the intercity trains will be equipped with WLAN,” says Jeannine Pilloud.

A major improvement could be the installation of equipment that amplifies signals received inside and outside the train cars, giving better access to the cell phone and Internet network.

1.8 million cell phone tickets ordered and number growing

The CFF app for ordering online tickets via cell phone is proving popular, with 1.8 million users since it was introduced in 2010, and the number is growing steadily, says the rail company.

Users of the small pocket timetables will find that some of the international ones are disappearing, in favour of online information, and that smaller stations’ stops are no longer listed, but are incorporated into regional listings. All details will be available online, however.

French-speaking Switzerland, especially commuters, to see significant improvements

A host of changes for trains in the Lake Geneva region will have a significant impact:

More double-decker trains will be used on the Geneva airport/Lucerne line, offering more seats

An additional InterRegio train will run between Neuchatel and Lausanne at 07:53 and the Neuchatel/La Chaux-de-Fonds/Le Locle line will have additional service during rush hour and a pair of trains is being added to the Neuchatel to Bienne line

Canton Vaud: the S4 line is being extended from Morges to Allaman, stopping in Saint Prex and Etoy, which will now have trains every 30 minutes instead of once an hour, Monday to Friday.

Geneva: La Plaine/Geneva, more trains will run during rush hour. Coppet–Geneva–Lancy-Pont-Rouge trains, the 30-minute schedule is being extended for weekend night and trains will run every half hour on Fridays and Saturdays until the end of the day.

New international connections, travel time cut on major links

Some serviced is back, but expect delays, disruptions for the morning

Lausanne-Geneva trains, including Brig-Geneva airport line, not running Tuesday morning

Update 09:15  GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Trains are back on the track and running btween Lausanne and Geneva, after a 70-minute stop during rush hour on one of Switzerland’s most heavily travelled routes, says the CFF rail company. A signal box breakdown in Coppet was responsible for stopping the trains from 07:30 to 08:40. Repair work will continue until noon, but travellers should expect disruptions and delays for the morning, says the CFF.

Regional and RER trains were  not affected, between Geneva and Coppet, and between Lausanne and Allaman, but the breakdown left the Intercity trains unable to make the Lausanne-Geneva connection.

The CFF announced the problem via loudspeakers on the quais and put a team of helpers out to guide people.

Updates in English from the CFF.

Here are details from the CFF, provided at 08:21:

Between Coppet and Gland on the Genève-Aéroport – Lausanne line, no train services are operating.

The Lancy-Pont-Rouge – Genève – Coppet S-Bahn trains are running on schedule.

Trains RE Genève – Lasanne are cancelled between Coppet and Gland.

Trains IR Genève-Aéroport – Lausanne – Brig are cancelled between Genève-Aéroport and Lausanne.

Trains IR Genève-Aéroport – Lausanne – Bern – Luzern are cancelled between Genève-Aéroport and Lausanne.

Trains ICN Genève-Aéroport – Morges – Biel/Bienne – Basel SBB / Zürich HB – St. Gallen are cancelled between Genève-Aéroport and Morges.

Intercity trains Genève-Aéroport – Lausanne – Bern – Zürich HB – St. Gallen are cancelled between Genève-Aéroport and Lausanne.

Passengers travelling from Coppet to Nyon or vice versa travel via BUS TPN11.

Reason: Signal box malfunction

Duration of disruption indefinite.

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The 28-year-old Swiss luxury limousine driver who passed you in his Bentley Continental the night of 21 April (you didn’t even spot him?) at more than 320kph on the A1 near the Vengeron exit no longer has a driver’s license and he will have to face a judge over charges of very seriously endangering the lives of others.

In addition to driving more than 200kph over the speed limit police investigators say he held his cell phone up to the speedometer while driving, to make three videos.

The videos show clearly that he covered 90 metres a second, according to police.

The videos were seized by a special unit of the Vaud police, who interviewed the driver in September. He claimed initially to have had a passenger who did the filming, but police say they have evidence he was travelling alone. The three films were made between 03:31 and 03:36, between Coppet and the Vengeron interchange.

Chateau de Chillon is one of Switzerland's most visited landmarks, but canton Vaud's other 11 major chateaus are also part of rich historical tapestry

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – Canton Vaud’s 12 historic chateaus, open to the public, are joining together to offer a special deal at the end of September to encourage people to learn more about this aspect of local history. A single ticket will open the door to all 12 the weekend of 24-25 September, for CHF15 for adults and CHF10 for children or CHF35 for a family.

The 12 “monuments” are: Prangins, Ollon, Chillon, Oron, Coppet, Nyon, Morges, Moudon, La Sarraz, Yverdon, Grandson and Avenches. Some are privately owned, others publicly and while most are medieval, two are 18th century.

They are part of the canton’s landscape of about 200 chateaus, towers, fortified residences and lords’ seats.

They are regularly open to the public but the shared ticket has been offered only once before in the 17 years of the Vaud Chateaus Association.

Coppet main street to be closed Tuesday 6 September for demolition crews

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – The main road through Coppet, near Nyon, was closed Saturday for several hours while debris from a building that collapsed in the early hours was removed. Canton Vaud police say it is unclear what caused the building at number 14 Grand-rue to give way. It was being used as a storage area.

Parts of the building, which was totally destroyed, fell into the main road, but no one was injured. The collapse occurred at 04:45 and police and firefighters quickly blocked off the area and the road. Rescue teams, including search dogs from the Vaud Gendarmerie and the specialist Redog teams searched for possible victims trapped in the rubble, but found no signs of people.

A car parked behind the building was damaged by falling materials. The road was re-opened at 21:15 Saturday but police say the information they currently have is that the through-road will be closed all day Tuesday 6 September to allow demolition crews to remove the building.

Chateau de Coppet, home to the International Menuhin Music Academy (source: IMMA)

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – The International Menuhim Music Academy (IMMA), newly based in Coppet, Tuesday 23 August named Maestro Maxim Vengerov, “the greatest violinist of his generation”, its new music counselor.

The IMMA was founded 30 years ago in Gstaad by Yehudi Menuhin, widely considered the finest violinist of the 20th century. It has 16 students from throughout the world and its mission is to offer a three-year scholarship every year to a number of violin and other string instrument virtuosos the opportunity to perfect their education by working with maestros and professors.

Gstaad remains the centre for IMMA’s week-long “Rencontres Musicales” every summer, where students and teachers work and offer performances that are open to the public.

The students, who are selected based only on talent, follow individualized programmes, including master classes at the IMMA. Their academic musical studies are designed to lead to a Master of Advanced Studies, MAS, and the academy is currently working towards its programme being recognized by the HES SO and expects to offer the MAS by 2012.

Students have a second part to their education, public concerts, as part of the newly renamed Menuhin Academy Soloists chamber orchestra.

Tuition is free for the students, who live with families in the area (see Editor’s Notepad: appeal to local families).

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – Vaud Police are seeking witnesses to and information about an accident that occurred at 07:35 Monday on the A1 autoroute between Nyon and Coppet, in the direction of Geneva. No one was injured when a car spun several times but the driver of another car, who was earlier reported to have caused the accident, left the scene.

The driver of that car has now gone to the police and they are seeking witnesses to establish what exactly happened.

The initial report from the police noted that a woman driving a beige Mazda 636 in the right lane, going 110 kph, used her signals to move into the left lane. As she did so she noticed a gray Q5 Audi Break with Vaud plates come up rapidly on her tail, flashing its lights at her. The driver swerved to the right to pass her, then swerved back into the left lane, suddenly braking “violently” according to police. The woman was also forced to brake and she lost control of her vehicle, which then spun several times, hitting the central barrier, coming to a halt facing the wrong way in the left lane.

The other driver continued down the road.

Anyone with information that will help clarify what exactly happened is asked to go to the nearest police station or call 021 644 4444.

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – A 27-year-old canton Geneva man is in critical condition following an early morning crash next to the Coppet autoroute exit. He was heading in the direction of the lake on the main road at 06:40 when, for reasons that are not clear, he ran a red light. He hit a car coming off the autoroute and was thrown heavily to the pavement.

Passing motorists provided first aid and an ambulance was called; the man was taken by Rega helicopter to the Hug, Geneva university hospitals.

Line closest to the station in Geneva, right, is reserved for Geneva-Coppet traffic, where the CFF wants to have 4, not just 2 trains an hour each way

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Mies and Chambésy could soon be home to two new crossing points for CFF regional trains, residents learned Wednesday evening.

The Tribune de Geneve reports that the Swiss rail company met with residents to explain about the works that need to be undertaken in the area to handle the rapidly growing traffic on the Geneva-Coppet rail line.

Trains currently run every 30 minutes but traffic has become so dense, particularly at each end of the work day, that trains are needed every 15 minutes.

The two trains currently meet at Creux-de-Genthod but an additional line and two extra crossing points are needed to increase the frequency.

The new line, lake side of the tracks, would later become part of the RER regional system, Suva, and the trains will continue on to Annemasse.

According to  the Tribune, the CFF would like to see the works, which will take 2.5 years, completed by 2015, but negotiations that began with landowners in 2010 are not yet completed.

geneva_train_cff_2009_1Update 2, 22:45  Lausanne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Years of arguing and debate over the need for the Lake Geneva region to rapidly develop its train service were brought to a close Monday 21 December with a framework agreement signed by the federal and cantonal governments and the CFF rail company. The agreement acknowledges that the Geneva-Lausanne area is one of the fastest-growing in Switzerland and states the intent of the signing parties to develop a rail network and service that match the rapidly changing need for public transport in the area.

Third and possibly fourth rail line planned

The two cantons have agreed to put up CHF312 million in pre-financing for several projects, designed to speed up the project. The 20-year plan, to 2030, will increase the frequency of trains to one every 15 minutes between Lausanne and Geneva. The number of seats will double by 2020. Several congestion points are targeted: Mies in Vaud and Chambésy in Geneva plus the freight passing line between Nyon and Coppet. The three-phase plan calls for the main lines and RER regional system to be improved first, then the third rail line between Renens and Allaman to be built during a second phase, when the system will also be extended in the area west of Geneva. Main train stations will be modernized.

The third phase will involve building a fourth rail line and improving public transport access to Geneva’s airport.

Coppet, Vaud, Switzerland (24 Heures, Fre) – Anti-noise walls along the autoroute are increasingly familiar as the federal government and cantons work to reduce unacceptably high noise levels. Less common: a high-tech plastic wall put up by a home-owner, at her expense, to reduce noise from the lake road, but this is what Amalia Ciriza in Coppet has done. The village is not 100 percent happy about it.
