Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Switzerland registered 2,567 cases of dogs biting humans in 2008, a number that was very close to that for 2007, records published 15 October show. More than 200 varieties of dogs were involved in the incidents. Children are more frequently targets than adults and have the most serious injuries because dogs tend to bite them on the head and neck. CHildren were attacked in the dog’s home in 43 percent of cases and in public areas in 51 percent of cases. Doctors, veterinarians and cantonal officials have been obliged to report dog biting incidents since 2006.

Bienne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – A pitbull dog who wandered away from his owner in downtown Bienne, canton Bern 1 August, was shot in the paw by a policeman when he turned on the police patrol,  according to the Bern cantonal police. The dog chased some children, threatened a man on the street and was finally confronted by the police patrol. After being wounded, the dog ran back home. Both dog and owner were taken to the veterinarian.

Solothurn, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – A dog who viciously attacked a four year-old boy on a Sunday picnic in Schaffhausen 26 July is apparently owned by one of the main suspects in the murder of an elderly couple and their 35 year-old daughter in Granges (Grenchen), canton Solothurn, Blick newspaper reported 27 July. Former hammer-thrower Patric Suter was detained a month ago and is being investigated, along with three other suspects, for the brutal murder of the Dubey family. His mother was walking the dog without a leash or muzzle 26 July when the dog was startled and attacked the young boy.

Schaffhausen, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – A four-year-old boy was bitten by a one-year-old Rotweiler dog while his family picnicked near a main road in an industrial zone in Schaffhausen, north of Zurich, Sunday, around 17:00. The boy is in serious condition with head injuries but his life is not in danger.
