Enea's new Tree Museum, Zurich (click on images to view larger)
Update 4 June / Zurich, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Zurich will soon add a new museum to its already eclectic and rich collection of these. One of the world’s top landscape architects, Enzo Enea, will open a tree museum in Raperswil-Jona, canton St Gallen, 14 June. The trees are a collection from those he has moved or adopted over the years while creating new gardens for people, and the youngest is 50 years old. About 120 trees will be on display at any given time. The tree museum is part of a 7.5 hectare park whose magnificent blooms will be on display for the public starting 14 June.
Zurich museums include, besides the famed Kunsthaus art museum, the Migros art museum with a notable contemporary art collection, the Rietberg collections/exhibits which host top international shows such as the just-closed “Mexico: Teotihuacan, The Mysterious City of Pyramid”, and which is worth visiting even just to see the grounds of this magnificent home which played host to composer Richard Wagner for nine years. It was here he offered his new composition “Tristan and Isolde”, written for Mathilde Wesendonck, his hostess, with whom he had an intimate relationship.

Update 09:00 Saturday 10 October Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The warmest October day since 1910 was a treat earlier this week, with temperatures staying above 10C even at night and rising to 30C (Meteoswiss explains why, in French).
Good weather ahead in the Lake Geneva region
A day of rain in the Lake Geneva area Thursday cooled things down and the leaves have begun to fall, but the weekend promises a good dose of fine weather, mixed with occasional showers. At 09:00 Saturday morning it is raining everywhere in Switzerland, it appears, but the forecasters are still promising it will mostly disappear and we’ll have sunshine: have faith!
It’s relatively warm, with temperatures rising to 18C, perfect for outdoor markets, planting new wild grasses, just reading a suspenseful novel in a sunny spot, cooking up a storm with seasonal foods, or hiking through the vineyards.
What’s on in Geneva and Lausanne, the rest of the region
Sunday is Expat Expo in Geneva, the second of the region’s two big fairs with exhibitors and more, for the English-speaking population. Head out of town, under two hours from Geneva, to watch the sheep come down from the high alps, in Champéry Saturday morning. Head for the circus Saturday night: the famous Swiss Knie circus has started its 2009 programme on the lakefront in Lausanne.
Be sure to check the GenevaLunch events pages for what’s on throughout the region (click on a date on the calendar to see full display).
Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - There will be no Foire de Genève this year. Viviane de Witt, director of Geneva’s signature trade show, announced the surprise cancellation on Radio Cité 9 September. Citing a lack of interest on the part of the cantonal authorities, and one third fewer reservations from exhibitors, as well as fears concerning the flu pandemic, de Witt said she hoped that the 2010 edition of the fair would go ahead under her management.
The fair attracted 600 exhibitors and 300,000 visitors to its exhibits in 2008, and highlights garden, living, design, and wellness exhibits over nine days in November. Cantonal authorities were surprised and promised to put something else in place instead at Palexpo, the fair’s venue, whose management expressed dismay at the news, as well.
