Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Switzerland has 250 varieties of snails and 80 of them risk extinction. For those who are not gardeners or bird watchers, the bad news is that snails play a key role in maintaining the balance of nature. They are a source of food to some birds but they are important for recycling dead vegetation. Many of the varieties found in Switzerland, especially in the Alps, no longer exist elsewhere in the world, according to the Swiss Society for the Protection of Birds (ASPO).
