Geneva Servette Hockey Club, training: the Spengler Cup has shown the team looking tougher than in recent weeks

Davos, Switzerland (GenevaLunch)Geneva-Servette Hockey Club (GSHC) took an early three-goal lead in their semi-final Spengler Cup match against St Petersburg in Davos, Switzerland 30 December 2010.The Russians, one of the top teams in Europe, started the second period with more aggression and determination and equalized at 3-3. The score stayed the same in the third period so the game went to extra time. St Petersburg scored a quick golden goal to take the game 4-3.

The Spengler Cup is cited as the oldest invitational ice hockey tournament and has been held annually in Davos since 1923 when it was won by Oxford University. Things have become more professional since then but the Cup has retained some of its festive feeling. The current teams are HC Davos, GSHC, Spartak Moscow, Sparta Prague, St Petersburg and Team Canada. The Canadian team is a selection from players in different teams in Europe.

GSHC lost their first game, against St Petersburg, 1-3 but then pulled off a fine 3-4 win over Sparta Prague. Davos have won both their games, 4-2 against Moscow and 3-2 over the Canadians. Davos will play Team Canada in the other semi-final at 20:15, 30 December. The final showdown takes place 31 December at noon.

Team Canada beat Davos 4-0 to set up the final against St Petersburg.
