GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – London has not seen a show like this for a while, excluding the recent royal wedding: more than £17.2m million raised in one night Thursday 9 June at a party for Absolute Return for Kids (ARK), a UK-based charity, whose founding chairman is Swiss-British-French financier and social celebrity Arpad Busson, who heads EIM in Nyon.
The money will go to a series of children’s health programmes, including retro-virus vaccinations in southern Africa, to reduce the high incidence of dangerous early childhood diarrhea.
The charity had been honoured the previous day with the UK’s top award for charity, the UK Charity Awards 2011, for its work in Bulgaria.
Children might be the reason for the glamorous party, but all eyes were on the 1,000 people who paid £10,000 each to attend the fundraiser. The highlight of the evening, at least for the crowd outside, was the arrival of a stunning couple, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the royal newlyweds, who were attending their first official function, dressed to outshine anyone. And there were plenty of people to outshine, as the Daily Mail was at pains to point out Friday morning with a fine collection of photos to accompany its front page story.
EIM is a Swiss hedge funds company that manages some $13 billion in funds, up from $10b in October 2010, when the firm ended its distinction between alternative and other funds management, according to Swiss Bilan magazine. The recent rapid growth in the funds managed by the companies was cited by the San Francisco Chronicle as a sign that the recovery of the hedges fund industry is now well underway.
Busson is no stranger to the celebrity life, first as a student at Le Rosey in Rolle, canton Vaud, then in an early and well-publicized relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett and later during his long relationship with super-model Elle McPherson (mother to his two children) and four years with actress Uma Thurman.
Parking, driving restrictions in place
Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Drivers beware: the frequently snarled traffic in Geneva’s city centre and paucity of parking places could be worse than usual this weekend, with the Geneva Marathon for Unicef running. Use public transport if you’re a runner or spectator, as the lakefront area’s parking will not be available.
A record number of runners from 90 countries are entered, and the city centre was already buzzing Friday, with the registration centre for runners opening on the Quai Wilson.
The races start Saturday 14 May with 800 women and 400 children running in La Genevoise, a 6km race exclusively for women, and the four Kids Runs for children ages 6 to 13.
The half-marathon and marathon take place Sunday, with 1,100 and 3,300 runners respectively.
The focal point will be the Marathon Village that opened Friday in front of the Hotel Wilson, a centre for runners and their guests, as well as the general public.
Village opening hours are:
• Friday 13 May from 16:00 to 20:00
• Saturday 14 May from 09:00 to 19:00
• Sunday 15 May from 10:00 to 16:00 (but no bib will be given out on that day)
The starts for the Geneva Marathon for Unicef races:
Saturday 14 May 2011
- La Genevoise: Start at 14:00 (Quai Wilson)

Swiss snow forecast, road alerts, Anzere traffic change, kids’ competitions this winter
Update 13:20 Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - It’s official: time to pull out those skis and head for the Jura slopes, or tuck up inside and light a fire, because this weekend will be cold and wintry. MeteoSwiss (see GenevaLunch weather pages) is predicting highs of 1 to 2C throughout central and western Switzerland, with sun alternating with snow.
New booklet helps winter sports fans shift to public transport
Leisure time activities account for a hefty part of road use in Switzerland. ATE, Association Transport & Environnement, has just published an excellent guide to using public transport for winter sports, with details for the time it takes, how to best get there, equipment rental and more for each Swiss resort. The guide is an excellent resource and good addition to the information available about winter sports (Fre, Ger, Ita).
Winter roads: reminder from Vaud that conditions can dictate legal speed
If you don’t yet have your winter tires on the car, don’t delay, as snow as low as the plains makes for slippery driving, Canton Vaud’s highway department reminds drivers they are legally obliged to drive at lower speeds when road conditions, such as ice and snow, call for it.
Cantonal road authorities say they replenished their stock of salt this summer, but if the winter is a tough one, supplies in Europe are likely to run short.

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Geneva area media are sending out the alert that too many drivers are well over the speed limit in the 30 kph zones in city centres and around schools, with two accidents in a week that have put three children from Geneva in hospital, with serious injuries. Tuesday 30 June a 7-year-old boy was the latest accident victim when he was hit by a truck next to a pedestrian crossing on the rue Dancet near Plainpalais.
The first accident occurred 25 June in the St Jean district, a story broken by GenevaLunch, whose reporter Jared Bloch was one of the parents at an end-of-year primary school party that ended in tragedy: a brother and sister left the fete and were hit by a car on the crosswalk in front of the school.
