Car on fire, Riddes, Switzerland, near autoroute

Sion, Valais (GenevaLunch) - A 38-year-old man who lost control of his car, which crashed into a tree and caught fire, has a good samaritan to thank for getting him out alive and well. The man left the A9 autoroute near Riddes, heading in the direction of Martigny-Lausanne at 07:40 Sunday morning, when he lost control, for reasons not yet known, say Valais police.

He was trapped in the burning car, which was spotted by a driver on the opposite side of the autoroute.

The good samaritan parked his car on the emergency strip of the autoroute, crossed the road and helped the man out of his car, to safety.

Lausanne/Bex, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – A 20-year-old who was knifed in the heart Tuesday 1 September by two youths he didn’t know as he walked through Parc Montbenon in Lausanne, died Saturday of his injuries, Vaud police say. The 15- and 17-year-olds who killed him were caught near the train station shortly after the crime and told a judge they pulled a knife on him because they didn’t like the way he looked at them.

One of them had been charged in the past with attempted murder and spent time in a juvenile detention centre in the Jura, but he escaped in January 2009.

A second violent crime was committed by juveniles in Bex Sunday night, near the Vaud/Valais cantonal line, that sent a police officer to hospital with head, throat and knee injuries.

All four youths are of foreign nationality, from three countries, and none of them have permanent residence status. The crimes come at a time when Switzerland has been debating what to do with foreigners who have not become well integrated into Swiss society and who commit serious crimes.

Bourg-St-Maurice, France (GenevaLunch) - The seven-time winner of the Tour de France admitted that he had little chance of overhauling teammate Alberto Cantador as the race enters the final five stages. Tuesday’s stage from Martigny in Switzerland to Bourg-St-Maurice via the Saint Bernard pass into Italy saw a number of attacks and a nasty accident to German rider Jens Voigt who suffered severe wounds when he slid on his face after going over the handlebars.

Hans Erni, age 100, in front of earlier self-portrait

Lucerne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Articulate, still handsome, far more interested in debating the state of the world than in basking in the recognition that has at last come to him: this is Hans Erni at the ripe age of 100. Visitors tend to walk up to him, awestruck by his age, and walk away from him having forgotten his age because he gives them too many other things to think about.

A career spanning 80 years, the globe – with peace an enduring theme

Erni is one of Switzerland’s finest 20th (and 21st) century artists, but he has only relatively recently been acknowledged as fully as he deserves. His career, spanning nearly 80 years, was celebrated in February with a major retrospective in Martigny at the Gianadda Foundation. The Kunstmuseum in Lucerne 24 May opened the first public museum showing of his work since 1979 with a collection that traces the development of the artist.

Erni was honoured in Geneva Saturday 6 June:  his most recent project, a 60-metre peace fresco at the entrance to the United Nations building, the Palais des Nations, was unveiled at an outdoor ceremony open to the public. The year 2009 is a series of such events, throughout Switzerland – and Erni finds the energy to travel and participate in several of them.

Politics took their toll

hans_erni_hands7_0509It is not that Erni is an unknown artist: quite the opposite. He has a large popular following, his work is housed in the Hans Erni museum in Lucerne (an extension of the country’s most popular museum, the Transportation Museum) since 1979, and for decades he has been the guest of governments around the world.

col_forclaz_switzerland_sm

Easter Sunday in Switzerland was overcast for the first part of the day in much of the country, but the sun inched its way out. Mid-afternoon, at the Col de la Forclaz that connects Martigny and Chamonix, France, the greening of the valleys was apparent. Martigny and the Rhone Valley are to the left, the road to Verbier, which sits high on the mountain in the distance, is to the right (click on image to view larger).
