The last developer of Kodachrome film located in Parsons, Kansas is to close down and be sold for scrap. The last roll of Kodachrome film was processed 30 December. Film-maker Kodak introduced the film commercially in 1935 and it was highly regarded by photographers world-wide who praised its vivid colours and long-term stability.
Kodak gave the last roll of Kodachrome film to photographer Steve McCurry in 2009. He took pictures of a tribe in India on the verge of extinction and hand-delivered the roll to Dwayne’s Photo of Parsons, the last developer.

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Geneva-based ICVolunteers, which works with some 10,000 volunteers around the world, is running a second photography contest and exhibition following the success of its first one in 2009. The theme is “Diverse Perspectives on the Environment, Citizenship and Volunteering by using an investigative journalistic approach.”
Amateur photographers are invited to submit photos for the group’s gallery exhibit. They will also be used for an upcoming publication and calendar. The winner of the contest will be offered a Nikon digital camera.
Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The “Murs” photo exhibit at the Pont de la Machine in the centre of Geneva has been closed after attacks on the large-format photos, graffiti and slashing, in early January. The open-air exhibit had already been attacked in November shortly after it opened. A guard was posted, but the new attacks make it too costly to keep it open, say organizers.
The exhibit was organized to commemorate the fall, 20 years ago, of the Berlin Wall, and featured some of the world’s best photojournalists’ images of walls that divide, around the world.

Geneva, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The annual “Dialogue” meeting at UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees), 9-10 December, focuses on the relatively new phenomenon of urban refugees. The high-level meetings were accompanied by the opening of a photo exhibit at the United Nations building in Geneva Wednesday evening. “A struggle for rights”, by Geneva-based photographer Zalmai, shows some of the people, urban refugees, who often live unnoticed by their neighbours in three cities in three countries: Colombia, Malaysia, and South Africa.
The exhibit is open to the public.
The photographs were shot during five months, and show the stark reality, in black and white, of refugees and displaced persons in three cities not immediately associated with massive dislocations of people. Zalmai spent time among the internally displaced in Cartagena, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, already poor country people who were uprooted by the simmering conflict over the drugs trade in the country.
In South Africa, the photographer depicts the plight of the human flotsam from three or four countries of Africa who have sought refuge in the country in recent years, the most recent being refugees from Zimbabwe fleeing that country’s economic implosion and ongoing violence.
Hirgiswil, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The popular annual Swiss Farm Calendar, which sells out by Christmas, has just taken the top 2009 award in the glamour field given by the industry’s Calendar Marketing Association.
