The French transport ministry said Monday 4 April that it should be possible to identify several of the bodies in the large part of the plane which has been found in the sea off Brazil’s coast. The fourth search for the plane that went missing mysteriously 1 June 2009 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, turned up a large and intact part of the aircraft body over the weekend, putting to rest theories that perhaps the plane had exploded.

The crash killed 228 people and the black boxes were never found, but officials are now hopeful they might be uncovered.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution in North Wales had an extra dose of attention Thursday when Britain’s Prince William came with his bride-to-be Kate Middleton to help with the naming ceremony for a new lifeboat. The outing for the couple was the first official one for the prince’s fiancee and cameras went to work on what promises to be the first of a deluge of royal photos in 2011. Vladimir Putin, Russian prime minister and fitness fanatic, is unlikely to have a lot of immediate competition from other world leaders as poster boys showing off the results of their exercise regimes. Putin, in a series of photos and television footage released this week, is seen topless with rippling muscles on horseback, swimming and doing a powerful butterfly stroke and – a special bonus for his gentler admirers – fondly feeding a horse. The gallery of photos shows him visiting Tuva, Siberia during his holidays. Times, UK and Novosti photo gallery

US President Barack Obama has provoked the ire of Amnesty International and civil liberties groups by saying he has stopped the planned 28 May release of photos showing US soldiers abusing prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama said (BBC video) that the photos are not as sensational as those seen at Abu Ghraib in Iraq but they do not conform to acceptable behaviour in the army manual. However, he noted, the cases of abuse have been dealt with by the military and there is “no benefit” to be gained by releasing them, a change from his earlier stance.
