Rettenbach, Austria (GenevaLunch) - Switzerland’s Didier Cuche, the current World Cup giant slalom champion, made a fine start to the ski season with a win in the opening race, a giant slalom on the Rettenbach glacier. American skier Ted Ligety was second andCuche’s Swiss teammate Carlo Janka was third.
Bern, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) - Swiss skier Lara Gut, age 18 and the surprise hit of the 2008-09 ski season, was successfully operated on at the Ile hospital in Bern, but she will not be able to ski for at least three months, her team manager has announced. Gut suffered injuries in a major crash during training in September. The surgery is designed to provide maximum movement in the hip and she is now starting four weeks of physical therapy.
Alta Badia, Italy and Engelberg and St Moritz, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – It was a great weekend for Swiss skiers, in women’s and men’s downhill races and ski jumping.
Lake Louise, Canada (TSR, Fre) – Four Swiss skiers finished among the top 10 in the Super-G races in Canada over the weekend. Didier Cuche, who placed third, was on the podium for the second time this year. Daniel Albrecht of Switzerland, who placed eighth, remains in first place overall, with Cuche in second.
