GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – More than six years of renovations were needed to restore the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia to its former glory. The theatre has been home to the renowned Bolshoi Ballet company but the 1776 building has also seen a number of historic events, including the official founding of the creation of the Soviet Union.
The Bolshoi Ballet will be performing one of the pieces for which it has long been known, “The Nutcracker”, on the main stage for the Christmas holiday season.
Wednesday 2 November the world will once again see the beautiful main stage, with the first performance open to the public since renovations began in 2006. The opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, by Mikhail Glinka, will be showing. Two earlier performances were put on in October, one for workers, another for VIPs 28 October that featured a host of stars, including Placido Domingo.
The project was riddled with delays, cost overruns and suspected corruption, and not everyone agrees that the end result reflects the theatre’s former glory. The trial of an earlier contractor for embezzlement is still running, according to Bloomberg. Summa, a Russian holding company with interests in a number of heavy industries, stepped in, in 2009, to back the floundering $680 million project. The news agency notes that “the Bolshoi’s most comprehensive makeover in 150 years involved more than 3,600 artists, designers, builders and engineers in the last two years alone.”

St Prex, Vaud, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – The main street of the medieval village of St Prex was graced Tuesday night 25 August with star dancers from the Paris Opera Nicolas Le Riche and his wife Clairemarie Osta in Prokoviev’s “Romeo & Juliet” as part of the St Prex Festival.
For the second night running the storms that have dumped heavy rain on the region held off long enough for the performers to enchant the crowd. The festival is an open-air one, but an awning covers the main street, where the audience is seated.
Weather forecast: more rain Thursday, but weather is expected to turn sunny and warm again Friday

In Geneva, spring is here and with it lively, animated Geneva streets.
Everybody knows the main tourist places, the Jet d’eau, the St Pierre Cathedral, and so on. But do young people want to go there? There are many other less well-known spots that are more appealing but which remain unexplored by the tourists.
To start you off, here are four popular places:
L’Usine: the hub of alternative culture in Geneva. Young people in Geneva go here for concerts, art shows, theatre and other cultural activities. Also look at the funky BFM building, which dates from 1883. Today, it holds concerts and dance shows.
Les Bains des Pâquis: These public baths have existed since 1872. Today, they are a favourite summer place in Geneva. You can relax in the hammam or the sauna, plunge into the lake or simply lie in the sun on a chaise longue. You can also enjoy the « buvette » and its delicious chocolate cake, salads, and (if you are old enough) a nice cold beer.

Geneva, Switzerland (Collège Voltaire student newspaper) – In 2009 there are some important birthdays and events to celebrate them: the 500th birthday of John Calvin and the 450th anniversary of the Collège de Geneve. Can you imagine them being so old?! Let’s go back in time: during the 16th century some people, inspired by Martin Luther’s ideas, wanted to establish what would become the Protestant religion. Calvin didn’t agree with the Catholics of the day because he felt they obliged believers to pay for their salvation. He believed that salvation was a gift from God. Calvin, a French reformer, arrived in Geneva in 1536.

A team of archeologists from the Museum of London have found what they believe to be Shakespeare’s first theatre, in Shoreditch, possibly the site of the premiere of Romeo and Juliet, they have told the BBC. The remnants of the theatre were uncovered in the summer of 2008, but parts of it may lie under a housing project.
